Murshidabad Police Arrest Three AJUP Leaders, Summon MLA Kabir for Questioning

Behrampore: A day after CM Suvendu Adhikari’s assembly statement promising action against AJUP chairman and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir, three AJUP workers were arrested in Murshidabad on Tuesday. Police also served notices at Kabir’s Manikyahar residence, directing him to appear at Shaktipur PS on July 3 and Rejinagar PS on July 4 for questioning over his public speeches.
On June 8, during a meeting in Shaktipur, Kabir threatened to drag the Shaktipur OC out of his office. On June 26, Kabir stated in Rejinagar that he would not listen to the SP or even the CM if he lost his temper.
In his speech during the debate on the “anti-goon” law in the assembly on Monday, Adhikari said cases were registered against Kabir and govt would take action against him. “We will first pick up those who invited Kabir to those meetings, and then we will come for him,” Adhikari stated, warning that Kabir would not be allowed to make such statements again.
The three arrested AJUP men — Kashipur anchal president Golam Mostafa, worker Md Aminul Haque and Beldanga-II West block president Anisur Rahaman — allegedly organised the two events. The Behrampore CJM’s court sent Mostafa and Haque to five days of police remand and Rahaman to seven days of cop custody.
Kabir, who was at his Behrampore flat when the notices were delivered at his Manikyahar house, responded to the developments by saying, “I have nothing to comment on Adhikari’s comment, but I have faith in the judiciary. My life is one of struggle and I will fight till death, but I will not surrender to any force or negotiate with injustice.”
He added that his legal battle would precede a mass movement and that people “should wait until July 3” to see his next steps. Kabir further alleged that the new govt’s zero-tolerance policy was not being uniformly applied and claimed “political adjustments” had taken place in Murshidabad.
BJP Behrampore general secretary Ananika Ghosh said Kabir was trying to use minority communities as a shield. Ghosh added that govt action should first be aimed at netas.
