‘Accused in Gandhi statue vandal case suffers from mental illness’

Katwa: Police have identified the man accused of tying a black cloth around the face and hands of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Station Bazar in Katwa on Wednesday.
The accused has been identified as Raman Kumar Jha. During interrogation, he was unable to provide any coherent information apart from his name, prompting suspicion about his mental health.
He was subsequently taken to Katwa Sub-Divisional Hospital, where the attending medical officer examined him certified that the accused suffered from a mental illness.
On Thursday, Jha was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate, Katwa. After considering the medical report, the court directed that he be shifted to Berhampore Mental Hospital for psychiatric assessment and treatment under the provisions of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017.
