  • Kolkata: A city court sentenced a 56-year-old man to rigorous life imprisonment for murdering his wife in 2022. He was also fined Rs 10,000 under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

The murder happened on July 5, 2022, around 8.15 pm on Kankurgachhi Road. Uttam Bakuli, an unemployed driver, stopped his 50-year-old wife Babi on the road and stabbed her several times in the neck. Police said the attack had followed a long marital dispute. Babi was taken to a private hospital near EM Bypass, where doctors declared her dead.

Bakuli fled the spot after the attack, and the couple’s son, Abhishek, filed a police complaint against his father. Abhishek was the main witness in the case.

Later that night, Bakuli surrendered at Phoolbagan Police Station. He gave up the murder weapon and confessed to the crime, adding that he had consumed insecticide. Police took him to a private hospital, where doctors treated him. He stayed in hospital for about three weeks.

The case was investigated by SI Partha Pratim Das, who has now retired. After Bakuli recovered, police filed a charge sheet, based on which the court later convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
