  • Kolkata: With cops putting up guardrails around Kalighat, former CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday joined a candlelight march near her residence to protest the rape-murder of a minor in Baruipur.

Earlier during the day, a Trinamool delegation met the victim’s parents and demanded that those involved are caught at the earliest. TMC’s rebel MPs, however, posted on X, keeping faith in CM Suvendu Adhikari to deliver justice.

CPM, Congress and SUCI delegations also met the victim’s family.

A TMC team of MPs Dola Sen and Pratima Mondal, and MLAs Biman Banerjee and Bivash Sardar, visited Suryapur in Baruipur in the morning. They spoke with the family, and Banerjee also called them during the meeting.

Mondal said: “Mamata Banerjee stands by the family and is ready to provide whatever assistance they might need. The administration must take immediate steps to arrest the accused. We are not happy because they have created hurdles for our chief (Mamata).”

Sen said ex-CM Banerjee had been placed under house arrest since Sunday. “She tried to go to Baruipur alone but was stopped without any reason,” she said.

Rebel MP Saayoni Ghosh, also the local MP, expressed her condolences on X. “I have spoken to Suvendu Adhikari ji… Arrests are being made, a SIT has been constituted, he is in touch with the bereaved family and that the culprits will not be spared & justice will be done expeditiously. I thank him for taking prompt & necessary actions.”

Ghosh wrote that “mob hysteria has no place in a civilised society”, adding that “taking the law into one’s own hands is unacceptable and deserves to be met with strict action”.

Another rebel TMC MP, June Maliah, also took to X for “justice for Baruipur”. “Would request Hon’ble CM to make sure that the rapists who took away the life of a 12-year-old innocent child are not spared,” she posted.

CPM’s Sujan Chakraborty demanded justice and questioned the role of police. “In spite of informing the police, the cops did not take timely action. If they had taken action, the death could have been averted,” he said.

Congress state president Subhankar Sarkar said: “Before elections, BJP promised a zero-tolerance policy for women’s safety. But under the double engine govt, another incident, Baruipur, has been added to the list of Hathras and Unnao.”

A delegation led by former MLA and state secretariat member of SUCI Tarun Naskar visited the victim’s residence. They submitted a deputation to Baruipur police station. “If the police had been a little more proactive after receiving the missing report from the family, the girl might have been recovered alive,” he said.
