• Nadia family wages long 2-yr battle for pension as man with disabilities declared dead

  • Krishnaganj (Nadia): A Nadia man with “100% disability” has been receiving disability pension for over two years due to an alleged clerical error in which he was marked dead in govt records. Elections have come and gone, and the “dead” Rajkumar Biswas has voted in two polls and yet, the official database lists him as ‘deceased’.

For 36-year-old Rajkumar’s elderly parents, the last two years have been nothing less than a nightmare with the family’s primary source of income gone. Daily wage labourer Ashok and his wife Sushama have made repeated visits to Krishnaganj panchayat office, the block development office and the panchayat samiti. They have submitted all required documents, including a life certificate, but officials have allegedly maintained the same stance: “We can’t release funds if the portal shows him dead.”

Rajkumar’s plight has now snowballed into a local political issue. Criticising local administration, BJP Nadia South district secretary Amit Pramanik said Krishnaganj panchayat samiti leader of opposition Gautam Ghosh had been asked to speed up restoration of the pension.

While panchayat samiti president Kakali Das declined to comment, vice-president Anup Das called the situation unfortunate and asked the family to resubmit documents.
