  • Kolkata: Kolkata Traffic Police is asking civic agencies, mainly KMC and PWD, to repair severely damaged roads in added areas of the city before Durga Puja.

Police say work has started in some places, but several stretches in the Port area, Behala and Jadavpur divisions are still dangerous. Traffic guard officers have started making a list of such roads and have sent an initial list to KMC.

Biren Roy Road West is one of the worst-hit roads. Locals blocked the road for two days, and auto services between Behala Chowrasta, Green Field City and Moynagar were stalled.

Police have spoken to minister Indranil Khan, KMC, Maheshtala Municipality and PWD. Temporary repairs have started. PWD has also started work on Diamond Harbour Road near Behala bazaar.

Other roads that need attention include MG Road, Kastodanga Road, Motilal Gupta Road, Transport Depot Road, Taratala Road, Raja Subodh Mullick Road, Cossipore Road, Canal East Road and Canal West Road.

Police had earlier prepared a list before the monsoon. They are now making a more detailed report. They say good roads will help manage traffic better during Durga Puja.

Police are also preparing backup plans. They have asked for NCC cadets and are planning training for Ratha Yatra volunteers. All 25 traffic guards have been told to arrange extra help before Ratha Yatra.
