Kolkata: The Kolkata Dock System (KDS) of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) set a new single-day container handling record on Monday, moving 3,186 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). The port’s previous best of 3,081 TEUs was logged only weeks earlier, on June 12.
In the April-June quarter, SMPK reported 8.4% year-on-year growth in total container volume over the same period last fiscal. In three months, SMPK handled 2,53,945 TEUs in 2026, up from 2,34,272 TEUs last year.
Speaking on this, SMPK chairman Rathendra Raman said the gains reflect a sharp focus on operational excellence, infrastructure modernisation, and customer-first service. “With the ongoing modernisation initiatives and improved cargo handling system, SMP Kolkata is well positioned to achieve higher benchmarks in the coming years,” he added.
