  • Kolkata: The state govt has extended the suspension of three senior police officers, including former commissioner Vineet Goyal, by another 120 days. The three officers are being investigated for their roles in handling the rape-murder case of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024.

The other two suspended officers are former DC (North) Abhishek Gupta and DC (Central) Indira Mukherjee.

Sources said the extension of the suspension will allow the inquiry to continue without interference.

CBI questioned all three officers on June 19 as part of its reopened probe into allegations of evidence destruction and attempts to protect the real culprits. Goyal was heading Kolkata Police at the time of the incident; Gupta was in charge of the investigation at the RG Kar Hospital crime scene; Mukherjee was not directly linked to the main investigation carried out by Kolkata Police before the case was handed over to the CBI, but she was responsible for briefing the media.

The Kolkata Police detective department had arrested Sanjay Roy, the only accused arrested so far in the case.
