  • KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday said the man lynched by an angry mob in the aftermath of the Baruipur rape and murder case was innocent.

“The youth who was killed in the mob lynching was innocent. This is what the police have told me. He will also get justice. I have met his family,” Adhikari told reporters after meeting the victim’s family at the office of the superintendent of police in South 24 Parganas district.

Adhikari said nearly 200 people had been identified for allegedly vandalising public property, damaging police vehicles and railway tracks during protests that followed the recovery of the girl’s body on Sunday, news agency PTI reported.

“All those identified will be arrested. Not a single person will get respite,” he said.

Adhikari alleged that evidence had been collected against those who instigated the violence, including individuals linked to opposition parties, radical elements and “anti-national forces,” without naming any group, PTI reported.

He added that those involved in the mob lynching would be booked under murder charges and that strict action would be taken against all responsible for the violence.

“Their call recordings have been collected by the STF under the supervision of the DGP. The government will teach them proper lessons,” the CM added further.

Adhikari said he had directed director general of police Siddh Nath Gupta to submit a detailed report within 72 hours on the rape and murder of the 12-year-old girl, PTI reported.

“I have conducted a primary analysis and asked the DGP to submit a report within 72 hours. If there is even 1% negligence after the complaint was lodged, strict action will be taken,” he said.

Adhikari said the girl’s family had demanded the setting up of a police outpost at Surjapur, which he would inaugurate during his next visit to Baruipur.

The chief minister said he had briefed MPs and MLAs from various parties on the progress of the investigation and had also held a virtual meeting with senior police officers across the state.
