Kolkata/Siliguri: Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday inaugurated a Bailey bridge constructed by the Indian Army across the Balason River, restoring connectivity between Siliguri and Mirik after flash floods washed away the temporary Hume Pipe bridge last month.
Announcing long-term plans for the region, the CM said the West Bengal govt would finish building the permanent bridge at the site by March 2027.
Addressing a gathering at the inauguration, Adhikari said the Bailey bridge would provide immediate relief to residents who had been witnessing severe transportation difficulties since the temporary bridge was swept away during heavy rains in June.
“We have already sanctioned Rs 53 crore for the bridge. Our target is to finish it by March 2027,” the Chief Minister said.
Repeatedly acknowledging the Indian Army’s role, Adhikari praised the Trishakti Corps for building the Bailey bridge within a short period. “I sincerely thank the Indian Army for constructing the Bailey bridge in such a short time. This has been possible because of the coordinated efforts of the Army, the state govt and the district administration,” he said.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged the contributions of Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, local legislators, the PWD, the district administration and officials of the Hill Affairs department in expediting the restoration work.
In a significant announcement, the CM said the state would permanently station a civil defence unit in the Darjeeling hills from Sept.
