Kolkata: A man, Subhas Das, murdered his wife, Geeta, by slitting her throat with a sharp weapon near Rathindra Cinema Hall in Sodepur on Wednesday morning. The accused then attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the abdomen and was admitted to a hospital in critical condition.
The woman died on the spot. Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. A CCTV footage of the attack has gone viral on social media.
According to cops, Geeta and Subhas were married for around five years and were originally residents of Haroa in North 24-Parganas. Geeta’s parental home is at Mahendranagar in Natagarh, Sodepur. Police said that the couple had been experiencing marital discord for some time. Geeta recently left her matrimonial home and returned to Sodepur.
“On Wednesday morning, Subhas allegedly called Geeta to meet him. During the meeting, an argument reportedly broke out between the two. Witnesses claimed that Subhas suddenly pulled out a sharp weapon from his bag and repeatedly attacked Geeta, slitting her throat,” said a senior officer.
When locals tried to intervene and rescue the woman, the accused allegedly threatened them with the weapon and tried to attack them as well. He then stabbed himself multiple times in the abdomen in an apparent suicide attempt. Both Geeta and Subhas collapsed on the road in a pool of blood. They were taken to Panihati State General Hospital, where Geeta was declared dead. As Subhas’ condition deteriorated, he was referred to the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital, where he remains under treatment in critical condition.
Police have seized the weapon and are examining CCTV footage from the area. Senior officers of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, including deputy commissioner Kartik Chandra Mondal, supervised the investigation. Locals alleged that the stretch where the incident occurred frequently witnessed anti-social activities and demanded increased police surveillance.
