  • Kolkata: In a late-evening order on Thursday, at least 33 inspectors — most of them OCs — were transferred. Incidentally, five female officers were deputed to lead some of the most populous police stations, including Chetla, Sinthee and Sarsuna.

Included among them is Chameli Mukherjee who was earlier posted as Kalighat OC for 24 hours before being transferred. She will be the new OC Sinthee. Senior officers said that while several female officers have worked with distinction in the force, they cannot recall a time when female officers led so many important police stations

On Wednesday, Kolkata Police commissioner Ajay Nand had said women in distress must not be forced to move from one police station to another to file a complaint, and ‘Zero FIRs’ must be registered immediately when needed.

Addressing 183 female personnel at Police Training School during a special training program organised for woman police officers, Nand emphasised that ensuring safety and delivering swift justice to women remain the primary objectives of the force.

The session marked the first phase of an initiative designed to guide officers in charge of the newly introduced Women Help Desks across all city police stations on their exact responsibilities. Nand said a review of the initiative will be conducted after two months.

The implementation comes on the heels of an announcement by CM Shubhendu Adhikari, who declared a zero-tolerance policy regarding violation of safety of women and girls in the state.

The govt has launched specialized Women Help Desks across 500 police stations and is introducing a dedicated “Durga Squad” to curb street harassment.
