• Indian Museum to glow every evening with facade lighting

  • Kolkata: The city’s nightly streetscape is set to gain another illuminated landmark with Indian Museum authorities approving a proposal by Kolkata Restorers to light up the facade of the 200-year-old institution on Chowringhee.

The project will mark a shift from occasional ceremonial lighting to a permanent architectural illumination scheme for one of the city’s most recognisable heritage buildings.

“The facade of the Indian Museum is often lit during major cultural events, festivals and national celebrations, but the new plan will ensure that its historic frontage is illuminated every evening,” said museum director Sayan Bhattacharya after the proposal forwarded by Kolkata Restorers was approved by the board of trustees under the chairmanship of the governor.

Kolkata Restorers is a citizen-led group that has illuminated over 100 heritage sites across Kolkata, covering temples, churches, clock towers, civic buildings, religious sites and commercial spaces, creating a trail of softly lit architectural landmarks in neighbourhoods across the city.

“We will start work on Monday and hope to complete it in a fortnight. It could have been earlier still but for the rains,” said light designer Suyash Narsaria whose company Optiluxx Electricals LLP will execute the project.

Instead of the powerful lights that illuminate the facade of the building at present, Narsaria will use precise LED lighting to highlight architectural features like arches, columns and pillars of the Neoclassical building.
