Kolkata: Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to inaugurate a police outpost at Surjapur near Baruipur on Saturday, four days after he had announced its launch after meeting the kin of a minor who was allegedly raped and murdered. The CM is also slated to meet the family of lynching victim Indrajit Mondal in the same area.
The new police outpost will help locals register complaints and access basic policing services closer home. Till now, Surjapur had one police camp used for maintaining law and order. Residents had to travel around 10 km to lodge complaints at Baruipur police station.
Ahead of the CM’s visit, the local administration has initiated rapid repairs of the lynching victim’s damaged house. Govt aid, including essential food rations and clothing, also reached his family on Friday. “We want nothing except justice. The CM is standing by us, and we trust the govt,” said Ajit Mondal, the victim’s father. Cops are also providing 24x7 security to the family members.
On Friday, Presidency Range IG Konkar Prasad Barui conducted an inspection in the area ahead of the CM’s visit. According to him, the first floor of the new police outpost will be used for the official set-up, including the OC‘s chamber and the IO’s room while the second floor will be converted into barracks.
Before inspecting the outpost, the IG also visited the victim’s home. He also met the family of Indrajit Mondal. CCTV cameras were installed in front of his house. For the protection of Mondal’s family, cops were also deployed outside their home on Kulpi Road near Surjapur Hat.
Bapi Mondal, elder brother of the mob assault victim, said, “CCTVs have been installed and cops are there. The govt is also getting our house, damaged by the mob, repaired. We are waiting to meet the CM on Saturday. Since my brother was the sole bread winner of the family, I would like to request the govt to help us with an avenue for earning.”
According to officials, the CM is likely to reach Baruipur around 11.30am on Saturday. He will first visit the victim’s residence before meeting the family of Indrajit. Then he is scheduled to inaugurate the police outpost. The CM’s programme in Baruipur is expected to last around 45 minutes.
“Preparations for the inauguration of the police outpost are over. Subject to the CM’s schedule and weather conditions, he is expected to inaugurate the outpost during his visit to Baruipur on Saturday. Necessary administrative and security arrangements have been made,” said a state official.
The police have registered a total of four cases related to the Baruipur violence. On Friday, cops arrested one person in the lynching incident. Additionally, 33 people have been arrested for attacking police personnel, blocking roads, and vandalizing vehicles.
The Baruipur Government Railway Police (GRP) also arrested two individuals on Friday for disrupting train services and damaging railway tracks during the subsequent public protests.
