  • Kolkata: Members of the All India Marwari Federation met Posta Bazaar Merchants’ Association general secretary Bishwanath Agarwala on Thursday evening to express their support for him. Agarwala had been assaulted at his office last week when a woman slapped him and others hurled eggs.

The visit comes against the backdrop of several egg attacks on political figures and other individuals over the past two months. However, the assault on Agarwala has drawn a wider response from the trading community, leading to a brief shutdown of Bengal’s biggest wholesale market till the accused were arrested.

Kedar Nath Gupta, national general secretary of All India Marwari Federation, said the delegation met Agarwala to convey the organisation’s support and urged the govt to ensure the safety of the business community.

“We met Agarwala to express our solidarity with him. We are thankful to the state for the swift action. We also request the govt to provide adequate security to the business community as millions of livelihoods depend on it. We expect that the investigation will be impartial and time-bound,” said Gupta.

Established in 1935, the All India Marwari Federation has around 40,000 members and works in the social, cultural and educational sectors.

“I am grateful to them for standing in solidarity with me. They said whatever has happened is unfortunate and should not happen again. The govt acted swiftly and the accused were arrested within a day. We are thankful to our chief minister for the swift action. He is working for every section of society,” said Agarwala.

According to the police, four people, including the main accused, were arrested after a probe based on CCTV footage and local intelligence.
