  • Durgapur: A 26-year-old contractual worker died in an accident at Durgapur Steel Plant’s blast furnace department on Friday night during maintenance work.

West Burdwan’s Sk Sahidul was working alone on Friday night when an accident took place around 11pm. Workers suspect a guardrail broke while he was working, causing Sahidul to fall into a ladle of molten slag. Later in the night, noticing smoke, co-workers rushed to the spot and discovered Sahidul’s burnt body. A fire brigade team later recovered the body.

The plant management has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the incident.

Following the accident, workers staged an agitation demanding compensation and stronger safety measures.

Alleging a serious security lapse, Ispat Karmachari Sangh general secretary Rishikesh Kumar demanded an FIR against the management and examination of CCTV footage.

SAIL-DSP’s Contract Labour Cell issued a letter to the victim’s family, expressing grief and assuring suitable compassionate employment to one eligible dependent. Sahidul was married merely 15 days ago.
