Kolkata: Anjan Das, husband of former Trinamool councillor Sanhita Das and a former three-term Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor himself from Behala’s ward 129, was arrested by Parnasree police in connection with a 2020 assault case after fresh allegations surfaced during a court-ordered further investigation.
Police said the renewed probe brought in allegations of attempt to murder and outraging the modesty of a woman, leading to his arrest. His associate, Bhola Sarkar, has also been arrested.
The case was originally registered on Aug 7, 2020, on the basis of a complaint by Rabindranagar resident Sushanta Ghosh, who accused Das and six others of wrongful restraint, assault, causing hurt with a weapon, criminal intimidation and abetment. Police filed a final report before the Alipore ACJM court in July 2021.
The probe was reopened after Ghosh’s wife submitted a fresh plaint in May alleging that her family had been repeatedly targeted because they supported the BJP during the 2020 political unrest. She claimed the accused subjected the family to sustained intimidation and violence as an act of political vendetta.
After being taken into custody, Das was brought to Vidyasagar Hospital for a medical examination, where tension briefly flared as BJP supporters and locals allegedly surrounded the police vehicle and shouted slogans of 'chor, chor’. Personnel from Parnasree PS dispersed the crowd.
