  • Kolkata: A 24-year-old woman was allegedly abused, threatened and forced to apologise to the driver and helper of a goods vehicle in Behala’s Parnasree after she protested against their alleged negligent driving that nearly caused an accident on Friday afternoon.

According to the complaint, the woman, a television actor, was travelling on a motorcycle with a male friend towards Parnasree police station via Upen Banerjee Road to buy food from a local restaurant. Around 3.40 pm, a goods carrier allegedly sped past them near Vivekananda Hospital before stopping abruptly in front of their two-wheeler. The woman claimed her friend, who was riding the motorcycle, managed to apply the brakes just in time, averting a serious accident.

“I then told the driver and the helper that no one should drive so recklessly. The driver did not say anything initially, but the helper got out of the vehicle and started abusing us with filthy slurs. He snatched the key to our motorcycle, demanded that I apologise ,” the woman alleged in her complaint.

She further alleged that the helper ordered her to kneel down and apologise if she wanted the key back. “When my friend tried to intervene, they grabbed him, assaulted him and left him bleeding,” she said.

Terrified, the woman ran towards Parnasree Police Station, barely 150 metres away. Since the motorcycle was stranded in the middle of the road, her friend stayed back and tried to move it to the side.

“While I was on my way to the police station, they again caught my friend and assaulted him,” she alleged.

By the time the woman returned to the spot with a police team from Parnasree police station, the accused had fled. “On spotting the police vehicle, they threw away the motorcycle key and fled in their mini truck,” she said.

The woman said she had submitted photographs and the registration number of the vehicle to the police and sought a speedy investigation. A senior officer of Kolkata Police’s South West Division said efforts were on to trace the vehicle and identify the accused by scanning CCTV footage and gathering local intelligence.

“I frequently travel along this stretch on my bike, and I somehow felt the helper looked familiar. The police have been extremely supportive so far. I hope they arrest these men quickly,” she said.
