The investigating officer (IO) in the rape-murder of the 12-year-old girl at Baruipur’s Surjapur was changed again on Sunday — third time in the past 8 days. The probe has now been handed over to Shantanu Mukhopadhyay, DSP (detective branch), Baruipur Police District in what the administration claims will expedite the process. The case was initially handled by district officer Diganta Mondal. It was later briefly transferred to former Baruipur police station inspector-in-charge (IC) Jayanta Poddar before being handed over to DSP Mukhopadhyay. According to senior officers, the new team will review every dimension of the case afresh before taking further legal action. It is not yet certain if the IO change has anything to do with the encounter probe in which one of the four accused, Prabash Mondal was shot dead when he tried to flee after firing at cops in the dead of the night while the crime reconstruction was about to start.
