Kolkata: The Manicktala police have initiated a preliminary inquiry after a woman, a Trinamool Congress supporter, alleged that she was molested, dragged by her hair, and driven out of her home by a group of 22 neighbours following the declaration of the recent Bengal assembly election results.
The incident took place on May 4 this year at a govt-allotted flat on Bagmari Road. According to police records, the victim had been a resident of the area for nearly 40 years and was an active worker for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) women’s wing.
In her complaint, the victim said the accused individuals were local TMC activists until noon on the day of the election results. However, later that afternoon, they allegedly smeared themselves with saffron-coloured powder and launched a coordinated attack on her ground-floor residence.
When she refused to open her door, the mob used iron crowbars and hammers to smash it down. The attackers, armed with knives and iron rods, forcefully entered, dragged her out by her hair, and beat her severely while outraging her modesty. The group also ransacked her home and looted essential household belongings.
Since the attack, the woman claimed that she has been forced to live in hiding at an undisclosed location, unable to return home due to continuous death threats from the accused.
Following the submission of her complaint, the Manicktala PS has sought official permission and registered a FIR against the accused persons. The police have also seized some necessary CCTV footage from the area.
