  • Kolkata: Police have registered a criminal case against a social media user, who identifies himself as a Trinamool worker, for allegedly posting “highly abusive, defamatory and offensive remarks” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Facebook.

The case was initiated after 53-year-old Subhashis Kar, a resident of Behala’s Gopal Mishra Road, lodged a complaint at Parnasree Police Station on July 9 after coming across the posts. The complaint was later converted into an FIR.

Police named the accused as Rupam Banerjee. According to the FIR, Banerjee allegedly used the public social media platform to post explicit and abusive content targeting PM Modi and CM Suvendu Adhikari.

Behala police have booked Banerjee under Sections 356(2) (defamation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 351(4) (criminal intimidation) of the BNS, along with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.

Police said an investigation is underway, with cyber experts analysing the Facebook account’s digital footprint to trace its IP address and identify the user’s location. No arrests have been made so far, though police said a notice would be issued to the accused shortly.
