  • Kolkata: An overcast sky with multiple spells of rain in between kept Kolkata under a wet spell on Monday. The Met office has predicted some more intense rain spells in the city till the first half of Tuesday before the rain frequency and intensity fizzles out till the next day. The Alipore weather office is keeping a close tab on a developing weather system over the Bay which could trigger renewed rain activity again.

Met officials said that the current rainy condition is due to the monsoon trough over the state along with a cyclonic circulation over the Bay. Alipore recorded a rain amount of around 19 mm till Monday evening. In addition to Kolkata various south Bengal districts received light to moderate rain while North Bengal is being battered by heavy rain.

“We can expect few more rain spells, including some intense round upto Tuesday forenoon. This is under the influence of the monsoon trough as well as an upper air circulation over the Bay of Bengal. Even if it rains on Wednesday the amount is likely to be less significant. But there is a chance of renewed rainfall activities from Thursday onwards,” said Regional Meteorological centre Kolkata head HR Biswas.

The Met office is expecting the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal by Thursday with the possibility of this system intensifying further into a low pressure area. In that case this will be the second low pressure area over the Bay since the South West monsoon onset this year. Two weeks ago a low pressure area had formed which later intensified into depression. Even as the system impacted neighbouring Odisha the most, Kolkata and parts of south Bengal too got light to moderate.

“We will wait for the weather system to form. How this system impacts our region will depend on factors, including the form the system, its intensification, its path and how close it comes to our region. But overall we can expect renewed rain activities between Thursday and Friday,” added Biswas.

With some amount of rain every day the city’s mercury continued to hover below normal for the nine consecutive days. At 31.4°C the maximum temperature was 1.4 notches below normal. The city has already clocked 128 mm of rain this July after rain surplus in June with cumulative rain amount of 365 mm against the month’s normal 283 mm. From June to July so far Kolkata has received 493 mm of rain against a normal of 443, leading to slight rain excess this monsoon.
