Howrah: The Chatterjeehat Police Station in Howrah has arrested Arghya Mukherjee, personal assistant to actor Srabanti Chatterjee, on non-bailable charges, including attempted rape, molestation, assault, and criminal intimidation. On Monday, a Howrah court remanded Mukherjee in judicial custody, directing the police to submit a detailed case diary.
The complainant, associated with the same event management firm as Mukherjee, alleged that during a business discussion at his Shibpur residence in April, an intoxicated Mukherjee groped, assaulted, and attempted to rape her. She escaped, but Mukherjee threatened to “ruin her career” if she spoke out. Mukherjee, however, claimed the allegations are “fabricated and motivated”.
Defence lawyer Sankhajit Mitra argued, “The entire allegation is false and frivolous. They both had consensual physical intimacy; there was no sexual penetration. The complaint was lodged 2.5 months late, and the victim remained in contact with the accused after the alleged harassment.”
Meanwhile, actor Srabanti distanced herself from the accused, saying: “The Talentwala company was associated with me to manage my schedule... since 2024 and he was introduced to me as an employee of Talentwala. I hereby discontinue him to be my manager till further notice.”
