Kolkata: Brace for heavy downpour on Thursday as an impending low-pressure area is set to enhance the rainfall in Kolkata and the rest of South Bengal districts. While it is too early for Met officials to forecast if the system will intensify, they expect the system to be potent enough to trigger heavy rain on Thursday.
“The low pressure is likely to be formed by Wednesday morning over the North Bay of Bengal. We can expect very heavy rain in large parts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, on Thursday. The rain intensity could reduce gradually from Friday,” said HR Biswas, head at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
At present, the monsoon trough is passing through Bengal over Bankura and Canning, triggering intermittent showers in the past two days. From 5.30 pm on Monday to 5.30 pm on Tuesday, Alipore recorded 36.5 mm of rain. While this monsoon trough will continue to cause some amount of rain on Wednesday, the rain intensity will pick up on Thursday under the additional influence of the low-pressure area.
“Only after the low-pressure area forms will we be in a position to forecast if the system will further intensify or how close it will come towards our region,” added Biswas.
The forecast so far is heavy rain for south Bengal on Thursday, with possibility of gradual reduction from Friday and heavy rainfall activity to shift towards North Bengal by Saturday. Some amount of rain daily this July has kept the city mercury under check in the past two weeks. Met officials said the temperature will continue to remain at a comfortable mark for now.
