11 high-rise projects get go-ahead for construction

Kolkata: Eleven under-construction highrise buildings received the go-ahead to resume full-fledged construction on Tuesday after a high-powered committee constituted to conduct an audit of projects cleared them.
However, work remained suspended at 125 other project sites that the expert inspection team had visited after anomalies were detected in labour issues and use of deep tube well to draw water for construction.
The committee that was set up in the wake of the Taratala warehouse collapse, had identified 344 projects in Kolkata for inspection. A three-page form was thereafter issued for developers to apply with details. Of the 200 that had filled the form, providing details of project sanction, permit number and key personnel involved, inspections have so far been carried out at 136 sites of which 11 received the nod to resume construction on Tuesday.
Speaking to TOI, a Credai official said member developers had been asked to comply with any compliance issues at the earliest so that the projects can be cleared and construction can resume for timely delivery of apartments to home-buyers.
Admitting that several developers were under the misconception that paying 1% of the project value to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation as Labour Cess amounted to meet its obligation, the Credai functionary said as principal employee, developers needed to register with the labour department and ensure that labour contractors meet PF and other obligations.
Also, there is an issue with supply of water by tankers to the projects. In some sites, existing deep tubewells are used by developers as water connection takes a long time and affects project timelines.
“We wish the KMC had accepted undertakings from developers that the labour and water supply issues would be addressed in a month. This would have led to faster resumption of projects while ensuring compliance,” the official explained.
