Cal HC raps Health Sciences varsity VC over nurse exam

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the vice-chancellor of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) to explain by July 30 why 30 BSc nursing students were barred from appearing in their first-semester examinations despite a court order permitting them to do so. The court also came down heavily on the university’s conduct, remarking that the authorities appeared to expect students to “put their head at your feet” before their grievances would be considered.
The university came under fire after it was told to the division bench of Acting Chief Justice (ACJ) Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee that the authorities issued provisional registration and admit cards to 30 students on July 10 for two subjects after the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the university was dismissed by the Supreme Court on the same date.
The contemnors’ counsel submitted that the students have been granted provisional registration and admit cards; for them, the two subjects exams will be held on July 21 and July 23.
“It becomes an ego fight. You wanted to see whether the students would go up and contest your SLP or not. This conduct is deplorable, especially when it’s the principal of an institute. You are running a university ... They are not at your beck and command. You are treating the students like that, come put your head on my foot and then we will consider. This attitude is not proper,” the ACJ said.
