New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Friday said record voter turnout in the recent assembly elections reflected the trust of Indians in the electoral process and the strength of the country’s democracy. He also thanked voters for participating in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Speaking at the Election Commission’s first-ever All India Media Conference, Kumar said elections in India are conducted strictly in accordance with the Constitution, electoral laws and EC guidelines.
The day-long conference, attended by over 380 media professionals from states and Union territories, was organised under the theme, ‘Connecting stakeholders, strengthening democracy: Role of media in elections.’
Kumar said the electoral process is subject to concurrent scrutiny by multiple stakeholders. Describing India’s electoral rolls, covering nearly 95 crore voters, as a “living document”, he said they are continuously updated with the active involvement of over 12 lakh booth level officers (BLOs) and 15 lakh booth level agents (BLAs), who function as concurrent auditors.
The conference aimed to promote a better understanding of India’s electoral process and the mechanisms that ensure transparency and stakeholder participation in elections.
