Kolkata: Citing the development of Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Temple as a model, state govt has approached Centre, seeking financial assistance under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) scheme for the development of Gangasagar into a world-class religious tourism destination. The MP temple was developed under PRASHAD.
In a letter dated July 15, state information and cultural affairs secretary Saumitra Mohan wrote to the Union ministry of tourism, highlighting Gangasagar’s religious and cultural significance and urging Centre to support a comprehensive infrastructure development plan.
“Given its pan-Indian appeal and enduring spiritual significance, Gangasagar has immense potential to emerge as a world-class religious tourism destination,” Mohan wrote.
According to the proposal, the state plans to undertake a development programme that includes modern pilgrimage infrastructure, visitor amenities, heritage interpretation facilities, environmental infrastructure, smart mobility and crowd management systems, riverfront development, and improved public conveniences.
The letter states that PWD will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) in accordance with the operational guidelines of the PRASHAD scheme.
