Kolkata: A 28-year-old youth, Gaurav Choubey, was arrested for allegedly cheating college aspirants by promising them admission to Maharaja Srischandra College.
Choubey, a resident of Gopal Chandra Bose Lane in Sinthee, was picked up following a complaint by an 18-year-old girl from Shyampukur, who claimed he took money and original academic documents from her as well as some other students, seeking college admission, and then, failed to get them the promised seats.
Police said Choubey asked the targeted students to bring their class 10 and 12 registration certificates, admit cards, birth certificates, photographs and to meet him near Bagbazar Jagannath Mandir on last Monday. Two of the students reportedly paid him Rs 7,000 each, and another one Rs 3,000. The complainant claimed he kept back her original admit cards and registration certificates. When the admissions did not happen, he stopped taking calls and refused to return the money as well as the documents, police said.
A team from the Shyampukur Police Station, led by sub-inspector Shiv Krishna Mishra, arrested Choubey and booked him for cheating. He was produced before Sealdah Court and remanded in police custody until July 22.
