Kolkata: The Congress functionary from the port area, Mohammad Mukhtar, was arrested on Friday in connection with alleged violence during Muharram in Metiabruz.
Police sources said Nadial Police Station had registered a suo motu case after the incident and later took Mukhtar into custody as part of the investigation. A senior officer from the Port division said he was arrested on the basis of evidence, including CCTV footage.
Congress leaders claimed the arrest was part of a political conspiracy, alleging several political workers in the port area were joining their party.
Police said Mukhtar, who entered the underworld with the support of a senior Kolkata CPM functionary, had a long-standing rivalry with Md Iqbal, another influential local politician.
In 2010, Mukhtar allegedly led an attack on Chhatra Parishad and Trinamool Chhatra Parishad supporters outside Harimohan Ghosh College. Photographs from the incident showed him brandishing a gun. After the change of govt in Bengal, he shifted his allegiance to the Congress and was appointed as an INTUC leader for Garden Reach.
