  • Kolkata: Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Group is set to inspect sites in West Burdwan’s Durgapur and Panagarh for a semiconductor manufacturing unit, Bengal commerce and industry minister Tapas Roy said on Saturday. Roy was speaking on the sidelines of the 13th CII Manufacturing Conclave in Kolkata.

According to the minister, Mitsubishi representatives will visit the sites as part of the evaluation process for the proposed semiconductor manufacturing facility.

The development follows a July 8 meeting between Roy, state finance minister Swapan Dasgupta, officials and Mitsubishi Chemical representatives Teruo Fujita and Tomofumi Koyama, in which the company expressed interest in investing in Bengal.

Earlier, addressing the conclave, Roy said, “Bengal is also focusing on developing a global capability centre ecosystem, with a dedicated start-up policy expected to be unveiled soon. We are setting up an expert committee to simplify compliance requirements and improve ease of doing business in the state.”

“The vision is to establish Bengal as the preferred investment destination in eastern India. The govt’s focus extends beyond attracting investments to creating quality employment opportunities and ensuring inclusive growth,” he said.

“Work across these initiatives is progressing on a war footing, with employment generation and the state’s overall development remaining the highest priorities. The govt stands firmly with industry and remains committed to providing all necessary support to facilitate investment, expansion and sustainable growth,” the minister added.
