  • Kolkata: The soccer-crazy city has surrendered to football’s oldest ritual — choosing sides — as the countdown to the Fifa World Cup final between Argentina and Spain enters its final hours. From clubs and tea stalls to offices and housing complexes, loyalties have turned even casual conversations into tactical debates.

For a city that has long adopted Argentina as its football nation, Sunday’s final is as much about Lionel Messi as it is about another World Cup. The defending champions’ run to the title clash, powered by Messi’s eight goals and four assists, has deepened that bond. But Spain have found an unlikely support base, with many Brazil, Germany and Portugal fans backing the European side to stop Messi’s bid for back-to-back triumphs.

“There is no middle ground anymore. You are either standing with the great footballer or you are supporting the wrong team,” laughed Sakshi Singh, a software professional from Salt Lake.

For older Argentina supporters, the emotional toll is already heavy. “My family doctor has already reminded me to keep my blood pressure medicines beside the bed before kick-off,” said retired schoolteacher Subhasish Ghosh of Barrackpore. “Argentina’s last-minute escapes have already aged me. I don’t know if my heart can survive another penalty shootout.”

At a Chetla club where Brazil fans will gather, most members are backing Spain. “Argentina have been outstanding, especially because Messi keeps making the difference,” said Mintu De. “But Spain showed against France that they can dominate the biggest teams. If they keep attacking instead of sitting back, it will be a fascinating contest.”

In north Kolkata’s Fakir Chakrabarty Lane, a Brazil stronghold, Uttar Kolkata Dishari Club’s giant-screen screening is expected to draw hundreds, with members almost evenly split between Argentina and Spain.

Younger fans, meanwhile, are drawn to Spain’s possession game and tactical discipline. “Football has evolved. Nostalgia alone cannot win trophies,” said media science student Munshi Rajon. “Spain have looked like the most complete team in the tournament.”

At tea stalls, the Messi-versus-Lamine Yamal debate stretches late into the night. “Messi will always be a legend, but every era eventually finds its successor,” said Keshtopur resident Shreya Roy.

For Argentina fans, anxiety is peaking. “If Argentina loses, then I will go into depression like many in Kolkata,” said Sector V techie Jishu Chatterjee.

Tea vendors are ready. “We have stocked extra milk and tea leaves,” smiled Baguiati vendor Ranjit Das. “The boys will keep arguing until dawn. One group will celebrate, the other will be devastated. That’s Kolkata’s football culture.”
