  • Kolkata: The state urban development & municipal affairs department is taking up stern action against filling up of water bodies and illegal building construction in all 144 wards under Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

    Minister Agnimitra Paul on Saturday received several complaints on waterbody and filling up of ponds and illegal construction during ‘Mukhomukhi’— a citizens redressal programme.

    After this, the minister said a drive is to start from Monday to track down such land sharks and take necessary legal action.

    “We will start sending teams on Monday at the places from where the complaints have come. We will take strong action against all cases regarding waterbody fill up and illegal construction,” Paul said. A complainant from Dhakuria said some locals were allegedly trying to grab her property by filling up a pond behind her house. Another caller from Jodhpur Park-Lake Gardens area complained that three plots have been encroached. A caller from ward 14 complained that there were several houses under thika tenancy, where extra floors were being constructed illegally.

    There were complaints on waterbody encroachment and illegal constructions from Behala Chowrasta and KMC ward 124 area since 2024.
