Kolkata: A 40-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl after distracting her by handing over a mobile phone, triggering widespread protests in Dum Dum. Police also arrested a former councillor of Dum Dum Municipality for allegedly attempting to shield the accused, identified as Billal Gazi of Sapuipara.
The woman’s mother was busy with household chores when the incident happened. Later, a neighbour alerted her. She also alleged that her family was threatened of eviction by husband of a former councillor, when they complained. BJP MLA Arijit Boxi said: “We have lodged a complaint.”
