Kolkata: A 48-year-old woman suffering from persistent abdominal pain and progressive abdominal swelling for nearly a year, who was initially being treated at a private hospital, finally got successful treatment at Medical College Hospital Kolkata (MCH). Doctors at the MCH gynaecology department removed an abdomino-pelvic tumour measuring approximately 30x24x17 cm and weighing more than 5 kg in a challenging surgical procedure on Tuesday. The patient, Rajabazar resident Zainab Begum, is recovering well.
The patient’s family said she encountered several setbacks at the private hospital before investigations revealed the presence of a large abdomino-pelvic mass. A few days ago, the family brought the patient to the MCH gynaecology OPD, and a detailed clinical evaluation and imaging studies confirmed a pelvic mass with a possibility of spindle cell neoplasm.
Following a comprehensive pre-operative assessment and clearance from the anaesthesiology departmemt, the patient underwent surgery by a multidisciplinary team who excised the giant tumour.
“The location of the tumour inside the abdomen and the vascularity made it exceptionally difficult for surgical approach. The surgical precision made it safe, without injuring other vital organs and not losing too much blood. It is the result of collective dedication, expertise, and tireless efforts of both senior and junior doctors of gynaecology and anaesthesiology,” said associate professor Parthasarathi Mitra who conducted the procedure with doctors Shalini Mukherjee, Asim Kumar Nandi, Rahul Patra, and Kakoli Sardar.
Following the procedure, the patient was shifted to the general ward, where she remains in a stable condition.
Apurba Mondal, professor, unit in-charge, described the surgery as an exceptional achievement while Supratim Mitra, another doctor in the department, said successful management of such a challenging case at a govt hospital underscores the high standards of care available in the public healthcare system and serves as an inspiration for the next generation of doctors.
