Loreto College writes to Calcutta University for academic council, board of studies nominees

Kolkata: Loreto College on Wednesday wrote to Calcutta University, requesting a list of names to construct its academic council and board of studies, following the conferment of autonomous status from the UGC.
A meeting was held and the letter was sent to CU, asking officials to complete pending formalities and to send them the names of university nominees for both the academic council and the board of studies to be able start functioning as an autonomous institute. The college also informed the state higher education department about its autonomous status.
The UGC has instructed CU to issue a notification within 30 days regarding the conferment of the college’s autonomous status.
Loreto College, with the autonomous status, can now start certificate and diploma courses, as well as new degree programmes at the UG and PG levels, subject to approval from the statutory council. The college aims to gain greater academic flexibility by designing its own curriculum. It has decided to revise its syllabus to make them more contemporary, though it would be done gradually. Teacher-in-charge of the college Sister Nirmala said, “We will implement the new system this year, but for now, we will revise only 20% of the syllabus. We have to run two systems parallelly—the existing UG and PG batches will continue under Calcutta University norms and schedules, while fresh UG and PG batches will come under the new system. The transition will take at least three years.”
CU VC Asutosh Ghosh said the university would extend all possible support to the college to complete formalities in accordance with UGC norms.
