FIR against Kalighat Trinamool for Martyrs’ Day rally rule ‘violations’

Kolkata: Taking suo motu cognisance, the Hastings Police Station has registered a case against the conveners, organisers and supporters of Kalighat Trinamool Congress for allegedly violating specific conditions set by the Calcutta High Court during their July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally on Cathedral Road and obstructing traffic.
The case was registered following a complaint, submitted by a sub-inspector, who was assigned to supervise law and order at the rally venue.
The HC had granted permission for the rally with the condition that all those assembling should stick to one flank of the road and the opposite lane should allow uninterrupted flow of vehicles.
A police report stated that the programme started on the eastern flank of Cathedral Road around 1 pm but as large numbers of party members and supporters arrived, the gathering spilled beyond the allotted space onto the western flank, blocking traffic, pavements and even inside Moharkunja. Police implemented diversions, re-routing vehicles through Hospital Road and Lovers Lane, which in turn, led to jams near SSKM Hospital, the report said. An officer claimed the rally organisers ignored court instructions, making it a clear case of contempt.
