Zero tolerance for graft: CM cites action against 2 MV inspectors

Kolkata: Two motor vehicle inspectors have been suspended and the Anti-Corruption Bureau asked to initiate a criminal inquiry after they allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 22,000 from a truck driver with valid documents at the Rampur checkpost in West Burdwan. CM Suvendu Adhikari announced the action on X on Friday, framing it as a demonstration of the govt’s zero tolerance policy on corruption.
“The govt of West Bengal maintains an absolute ‘zero tolerance policy’ against corruption at any level of administration, department or govt. Extortion and corruption will never be tolerated under any circumstances and we are firmly committed to weeding out corrupt elements to completely cleanse our administrative system,” the CM said on X.
According to the CM’s post, goods carrier truck JH09BA3535 — owned by Dipak Singh and driven by Shiva Yadav — was intercepted at the Rampur checkpost while returning to the garage after servicing. The driver was allegedly pressured to pay Rs 22,000 towards a tax the state govt has already abolished. When he refused, the vehicle was seized.
Acting on the complaint, the transport department suspended motor vehicle inspectors Nazimul Haque and Anupam Banerjee under Rule 7(1)(a) of the West Bengal Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1971. The ACB has been asked to conduct a thorough criminal inquiry. Directives have also been issued to release the wrongfully detained vehicle.
“Any official found indulging in corruption, harassment or illegal gratification will face the strictest possible disciplinary and legal consequences. We are dedicated to ensuring a transparent, fair and corruption-free administration,” Adhikari said.
