Kolkata: Some 100 lawyers came together at Calcutta High Court on Friday in support of students protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, and against issues like eviction of hawkers, among others. The protest started from the main building of the HC and continued till the E gate.
Though the timing of the protest coincided with the one called by the Left organisations from Sealdah to Esplanade, the lawyers claimed theirs’ was an independent protest on various issues plaquing the society. Senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya said lawyers from across party lines and ideologies joined their protest, except for BJP.
“The excessive use of police force on students, the insensitive remarks of the courts — Supreme Court and Delhi HC — as well as evictions and demolitions being conducted without any proper legal procedure, the hawkers issue…everything was raised,” Bhattacharyya said.
This comes a day after the Supreme Court and Delhi lawyers staged demonstrations and issued strong condemnation following the police crackdown on student protesters at Jantar Mantar. The Supreme Court lawyers held a “Save Democracy, Save Constitution” demonstration on court grounds and recited the Preamble.
