Sukanta backs law amendments to prevent exam leaks

Kolkata: Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar on Saturday said that govt is ready to amend laws to prevent question paper leak as “no law is foolproof” and can be amended to plug gaps. BJP lawmakers in Kolkata, however, severely criticized attacks on journalists at Cockroach Janata Party’s Friday rally and claimed that movements are being organized to “destroy healthy democratic environment”.
“Our govt is always ready for discussions. We can discuss the issue and bring laws to prevent question paper leaks. No law is foolproof, and it has to be amended to plug the gaps,” Majumdar said on Saturday.
Claiming that Centre was always ready for a discussion, Majumdar said, “We have said this even inside Lok Sabha that we are ready for a discussion on this.”
Majumdar said that the issue of question paper leak is not new, and they are ready to ask about leaks during 2004 and 2012. “We are ready with instances of question paper leak between 2004 and 2014. In 2022, question papers of four examinations were leaked in Rajasthan. I have the list with me. As we are speaking now, question papers have been leaked in Punjab too,” he said.
Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya on Saturday trained guns on CPM and Congress, saying, “We have seen this activity of Left organizations before. They use students as shields to create unrest through miscreants. In fact, Congress and Left parties are trying to fish in troubled waters in the name of student movement.”
BJP MLAs on Saturday staged a protest inside assembly against attacks on journalists at CJP rally on Friday. “Govt has registered FIR against offenders. Many of agitators did not even have any relation with NEET examination. They came with sole purpose to create disturbance,” said state’s tourism minister Shankar Ghosh.
Asked if CJP or such outfits would be allowed to hold rallies in future, Ghosh said, “Administration will decide on that. We will decide on what steps need to be taken after reviewing Friday’s condition,” he added.
Bhattacharya took to his X handle to say, “In today’s era of fake information, misinformation and atmosphere of political polarization, responsibility of journalism has increased even more. If journalists are humiliated in this manner in name of protests, then democracy itself is being attacked.”
