  • Kolkata: An 18-year-old girl was allegedly harassed, abused, assaulted and intimidated at her own home by a group of men claiming to be BJP workers in the Girish Park area on Sunday. The girl’s mother, a Trinamool COngress booth president, lodged a complaint detailing physical violence, obscene abuse and severe intimidation. Police have launched a probe.

According to police sources, the incident occurred around 9.40 am on Sunday, when a group of miscreants — allegedly aligned to the BJP and accompanied by several women — unlawfully entered the victim’s home. At the time of the break-in, the girl was at home with her younger siblings while her mother was away.

BJP has denied all charges, claiming a personal issue was given political colour.

The complainant alleges that the perpetrators acted in collusion to physically assault the girl and subject her to “intense verbal abuse”. The attackers used criminal force against her with the intent to outrage her modesty, uttering sexually offensive language, and making explicit, derogatory remarks, it was alleged. It was also claimed that the assailants even assaulted teenager, causing physical injuries and severe emotional distress.

The assault reportedly occurred in front of the victim’s minor siblings, leaving the young children deeply traumatised. The group also allegedly issued dire threats to the family, warning that they would be forcibly evicted and that their property would be seized.

Preliminary findings by cops confirmed that the group of accused persons acted together to assault the victim, outrage her modesty and intimidate her family. Police have recorded the case under relevant legal provisions governing physical assault, criminal force against women, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation.

Police have ruled out a political dispute behind the incident.
