Probe lens on 2 docs over medical negligence death

Kolkata: Police have launched a probe against two doctors attached to a prominent private hospital in the city following allegations of medical negligence that led to the death of a 49-year-old woman.
The investigation was initiated after the woman’s husband, Pranabesh Kumar Ray, a resident of Ramnagar in South 24 Parganas, lodged a complaint with Ekbalpore police.
According to the complaint, Ray’s wife was admitted to the hospital on January 1, 2024, with persistent abdominal pain, nausea and sudden loss of appetite. She subsequently underwent surgery but her condition deteriorated, and she died on January 20 while undergoing treatment.
Ray alleged that the two treating doctors, acting with common intention, committed serious professional lapses and withheld crucial information about his wife’s condition. He claimed that neither the patient nor her family was adequately informed about her diagnosis, the necessity of the surgery or the risks involved before the procedure was performed.
The complaint alleged that the lack of transparency and negligent treatment contributed to her death.
Based on Ray’s complaint, police have registered a case against the two doctors and initiated an investigation. Investigators are examining medical records, surgical logs and treatment details to determine whether prescribed protocols, including those relating to informed consent, were followed.
The hospital said it would respond to the allegations through legal channels.
Police said the investigation was at a preliminary stage and statements of the medical staff concerned would be recorded.
