Kolkata: In a major security and operational overhaul at police headquarters, Kolkata Police is upgrading surveillance and detention protocols at the sensitive Lalbazar Central Lockup.
Following a security review, police have decided to install 54 new CCTV cameras to monitor detainees and enforce a policy requiring political protesters to surrender personal belongings before entering the lockup.
Those detained during civil disobedience programmes or street protests will no longer be allowed to carry mobile phones, bags or other personal items inside.
Designated lockers have been installed for phones, while bags and other belongings will be logged and kept in an adjacent storeroom before being returned upon release.
KP has floated an e-tender for the CCTV surveillance project, estimated at Rs 35.6 lakh. The contract covers supply, installation, commissioning and maintenance. The submission of tender closes on Aug 12.
Sources said the measures are aimed at preventing unauthorised communication and recordings while ensuring transparency during political detentions.
