Friendship Day celebrations this year are taking inspiration from one of the most familiar parts of modern friendships, the WhatsApp group chat. Marking the occasion, SOCIAL is hosting an initiative that invites friend groups to share the names of their group chats, often inspired by inside jokes, college memories, travel plans or shared experiences. Groups of three or more visiting the outlets can participate by showing the name of their WhatsApp group chat, while an online version of the activity also invites users to submit their entries. Some of the most unusual and creative group chat names from across the country will be recognised. The Friendship Day programme also includes community-led events and live performances across select cities, including Kolkata. The initiative highlights how digital conversations have become an integral part of friendships, with group chats often serving as a repository of shared memories, humour and everyday moments.
