Kolkata: Bangladesh has appointed Md Khaled as deputy high commissioner in Kolkata, while former journalist Umme Marufa is expected to join next week as first secretary (press), becoming the first woman to hold the post at the mission.
Khaled, a Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Service) officer of the 25th batch, took charge in the third week of July after serving as consul general in Kunming, China, and earlier postings in Myanmar, Portugal and Greece. He succeeds acting deputy high commissioner Ayesha Akter, who held charge after Mohammad Ashrafur completed his tenure.
Marufa’s one-year contractual appointment was notified on July 27, following the Bangladesh Nationalist Party assuming office in Feb. She replaces Md Tarikul Islam Bhuiya, who resigned on July 22 citing personal and professional reasons.
