Kolkata: A retired scientist from New Town who was allegedly defrauded of more than Rs 1 crore in a digital-arrest fraud earlier this year finally has hope of a full recovery of his money. Bidhannagar cops have arrested three persons from the Behala area — Biku Kumar, Duronto Patra, and Mohammad Javed — in connection with the case. They were produced in Bidhannagar court on Saturday and remanded in six days’ police custody.
The 72-year-old victim, a former researcher at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute and an author, lost Rs 1.1 crore to the scam where the cybercriminals posed as law enforcement and intelligence officers.
According to cops, the victim got a call on Jan 15 where the accused claimed to be an officer from Bengaluru Police who said the scientist’s Aadhaar card, mobile number, and bank account had been used in a human trafficking case.
Believing the claims, the victim handed over several personal documents, and was pressured into transferring Rs 1.1 crore.
