Kolkata: Purba Jadavpur cops have arrested local businessman Anubhav Bhattacharya on Sunday night after a woman accused him of drugging and raping her at his home in Vivekananda Nagar.
The woman told police that she had met Bhattacharya on Facebook about six months ago. They became close and had discussed marriage. She also alleged that he took several lakhs of rupees from her after claiming that his business was in trouble.
According to her plaint, Bhattacharya invited her to his home earlier this month, saying there would be a birthday celebration with other guests. When she arrived, no one else was there. She alleged that he gave her soft drinks, after having which she lost consciousness. When she regained her senses, she realised she had been sexually assaulted.
The woman filed a complaint at Purba Jadavpur PS. Police registered a rape case, sent her for a medical examination, and later arrested Bhattacharya from a hideout. He is expected to be produced in court while police continue investigating the rape and alleged financial fraud.
