Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will introduce an app-based parking system to bring greater transparency to parking management and curb illegal parking and alleged financial irregularities, state urban development and municipal affairs minister Agnimitra Paul said on Tuesday.
“Around 15,000 parking spaces have been identified by the Kolkata Police and the KMC, of which 10,000 have already been listed. The remaining spaces will be examined and added to the list,” she said.
“Vehicles will have to be parked only at designated parking spaces. Parking cars or bikes randomly will not be allowed,” Paul stated.
The model will subsequently be expanded to Howrah Municipal Corporation, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, and other urban local bodies across the state, officials said.
According to the minister, Kolkata Police is developing a mobile app through which parking fees will be collected, reducing the scope for cash transactions. Every designated parking area will display applicable parking charges, including the hourly fee for different categories of vehicles.
The app will provide real-time information on available parking spaces across the city. The app will also enable users to reserve parking slots, make digital payments, and manage their parking requirements. KMC will also deploy designated parking personnel. They will be required to wear prescribed uniforms and carry photo identity cards.
Govt has also resolved to crack down on illegal parking in front of residential houses and within neighbourhood roads.
