From 6 to 17, Kasba set to gain max wards in KMC delimitation

Kolkata: The Kasba assembly constituency is likely to see the steepest increase in the number of civic wards — from six to 17 — in the delimitation exercise planned by the state govt for Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
Among the other assembly seats that are likely to gain a significant number of wards are Behala West (10 to 17), Jadavpur (10 to 16) and Entally (5 to 11), according to a report sent by Central Delimitation Committee to the municipal affairs and urban development department on Tuesday.
The report, accessed by TOI, has proposed that the 144 KMC wards be reorganised in a way that the total touches 200 and also urged the state govt to increase it further to 209. The voter count in the reorganised wards will vary between around 15,000 and 16,500.
The current voter distribution varies widely, with Kasba averaging 44,269 voters per ward and Chowringhee 11,486 voters per ward.
If the delimitation proposals are accepted, 14 of the 17 assembly seats in the KMC area will gain additional wards. Many of the 14 constituencies are along EM Bypass in southern parts of the city, where a sustained real estate boom has led to a spurt in population.
The three constituencies where the number of wards will drop are in central and northern Kolkata. The ward count in Chowringhee, Jorasanko and Shyampukur will reduce from 11 to eight each. Three assembly seats in the south will see small gains — Rashbehari (9 to 10 wards), Bhabanipur (8 to 10 wards) and Metiabruz (6 to 8 wards).
In six assembly constituencies, the average voter count in each of the 69 proposed wards will be just over 16,000. In Shyampukur, the eight wards will have an average of 16,477 voters each. Tollygunge will have 14 wards, each with an average of 16,305 voters. The 11 wards in Entally will have an average of 16,262 electors each. Behala East will have 16 wards, each with a average voter count of 16,140. Bhabanipur and Rashbehari will have 10 wards each, averaging 16,051 electors.
Metiabruz will have the least average voter count per ward — 15,021. Maniktala will have an average of 15,082 electors in each ward. The average for Cossipore-Belgachhia is 15,267 and that for Jorasanko, 15,336. The figures for Kolkata Port, Kasba and Behala West are 15,614, 15,624 and 15,657.
CM Suvendu Adhikari had on June 15 announced that KMC polls would be held by Dec 2026. Before the polls, a comprehensive ward delimitation exercise was declared to address uneven voter distribution.
