81.2 mm Rain Floods Kolkata, More Showers Today: Met

Kolkata: After the heavy showers received on Wednesday, more rainfall is likely to lash the city on Thursday.
The Met office has forecast heavy rain for Kolkata and neighbouring districts of South and North 24 Parganas and Howrah along with many other south Bengal districts.
In the past 24 hours, the Alipore Met office had recorded 81.2 mm of rain. Since Wednesday morning, 64.9 mm rainfall was received.
The southern parts of the city got sharper downpour, central and northern Kolkata pockets also got their fair share of rain. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall throughout Wednesday evening threw traffic into disarray, causing delays for commuters. Important stretches, including Maa Flyover, AJC Bose Road, and Diamond Harbour Road, witnessed heavy traffic congestion. Vehicular movement was sluggish along Park Circus and Syed Amir Ali Avenue. Commuters reported significant travel delays. Traffic police personnel were deployed across major intersections to manage bottlenecks and restore normal traffic flow.
When Kolkata logged 62.4 mm of rainfall, Salt Lake 55 mm of rain and Dum Dum received 45 mm of rainfall. Met officials said the monsoon trough has started shifting towards south Bengal triggering the spells. This monsoon trough was causing torrential rain in parts of North Bengal. “By Thursday, we expect the monsoon trough to move closer over coastal Bengal. We are expecting some spells of heavy rain to hit Kolkata and other parts of South Bengal on Thursday,” said Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata head, HR Biswas.
The RMC Kolkata head added the possibility of the monsoon trough to continue triggering decent amount of rain on Friday. Spells are likely to become lesser in intensity and frequency thereafter. “Kolkata logged rain surplus in June which eventually made up the slight deficit in July,” said Biswas. While Kolkata should get a normal rain count of 364 mm of rain in Aug, the city has already received more than 150 mm of rain in the first five days of the month. The Wednesday downpour was also accompanied by thunder and lightning in Kolkata. Ballygunge recorded the highest 64 mm rainfall followed by 53 mm rainfall in Jodhpur Park and 51.4 mm rainfall in Mominpur between noon and 6 pm on Wednesday, according to the KMC officials. Ultadanga recorded a rainfall of 29 mm, followed by 22 mm in Thanthania and 20 mm in Birpara near Paikpara. Kalighat, Topsia and Dhapa recorded 36mm rainfall while Chetla and Behala Flying Club area received 30 mm rainfall. There was waterlogging in some city pockets, including Camac Street, parts of AJC Bose Road, Loudon Street, Hungerford Street, Jodhpur Park, Jadavpur, Biren Roy Road, Strand Road and Thanthania.
According to KMC officials, the inundation did not last for long and the water receded in a short time. The KMC is taking all measures to ensure water is drained out.
